A reoccurring feature in Diesel Era, “Freight Car Classics” is included in the Second Quarter 2021 edition. You’ll see three examples of Pullman-Standard’s (PS) 40-foot boxcar from three different railroads: The Milwaukee Road, Northern Pacific, and Union Pacific.
The cars are all similar, but each includes unique attributes. The inclusion of a sliding door with plug door allowed for easier loading of lumber products in the Pacific Northwest by providing a wider opening in the boxcar. This interesting late 1950s and early 1960s PS-1 variant is the subject of a new HO-scale replica from Tangent Scale Models and is featured with a review in July 2021’s Model Railroad News.
