Diesel Era is compiling images and information on The Milwaukee Road’s (MILW) GP40 diesel locomotive fleet for a future survey of these four-axle units. The road’s GP40s came in several batches (from 1966 to 1969) and with renumbering and other factors impacting the collection of 3,000-hp road units. MILW 2070 (EMD 35062) was built as a “warranty loaner” and used by railroads that bought early GP40s that suffered frame issues. When the frame situation was rectified, EMD began selling this group and The Milwaukee Road obtained four (2068-2071) in 1969. — Kevin EuDaly collection
